Everything else in your system exists to protect this one cartridge. The reverse osmosis membrane is where dissolved solids are reduced — the things far too small for any cartridge filter to catch.

Protect it between changes

Membrane life comes down almost entirely to what sits in front of it. Chlorine attacks the membrane film directly and sediment blinds the surface — so keeping the pre-filters on an annual schedule is the cheapest way to protect a component that costs several times more.
